An epistemic logic is built up on the basis of an analysis of two skeptical arguments. the method used is to first construct an inference relation appropriate to epistemic contexts and introduce "a knows that..." as an operator giving rise to sentences closed with respect to this new concept of inference. soundness and completeness proofs are provided using auxiliary three-valued valuations.

This paper attempts to argue for the theory-ladenness of evidence. It does so by employing and analysing an episode from the history of eighteenth century chemistry. It delineates attempts by Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier to construct entirely different kinds of evidence for and against a particular hypothesis from a set of agreed upon observations or (raw) data. Based on an augmented version of a distinction, drawn by J. Bogen and J. Woodward, between data and phenomena it is shown that (...) the role of theoretical auxiliary assumptions is very important in constructing evidence for (or against) a theory from observation or (raw) data. In revolutionary situations, rival groups hold radically different theories and theoretical auxiliary assumptions. These are employed to construct very different evidence from the agreed upon set of observations or (raw) data. Hence, theory resolution becomes difficult. It is argued that evidence construction is a multi-layered exercise and can be disputed at any level. What counts as unproblematic observation or (raw) data at one level may become problematic at another level. The contingency of these constructions and the (un)problematic nature of evidence are shown to be partially dependent upon the scientific knowledge that the scientific community possesses. (shrink)

Many avenues lead to human consciousness: introspection, phenomenology, cognitive science, philosophy, neurobiology. To these can be added aesthetics; both the production of artful objects and the appreciation of artful objects are characteristic of human minds. By looking at artful objects we can hypothesize why the human mind both produces them and responds to them, and derive from such hypotheses ideas about the nature of human consciousness, including its power to make present in the mind that which is absent from view. (...) In particular, the art of Shakespeare, being both verbal and formal, both articulates the peculiar burdens of human consciousness and demonstrates art's response to these burdens. His play Troilus and Cressida serves as an example, exhibiting and exploring the discordancies human consciousness is liable to, and at the same time incorporating those discordancies into a greater harmony through the formal structures of art. A Principle of fundamental importance, if it is valid, for the interpretation of the Pentekontaetia is laid down by the authors of A. T.L. iii in its most rigorous terms: it is that Thucydides has set events ‘in proper order … without any deviation whatever’. The conclusion appears to the present writer to be founded ultimately on a false assumption about Thucydides' purpose in these chapters, namely that he set out to write an outline history of the period of fifty (...) years to which he refers in 118.2 and, in effect, in 97. An examination of these passages reveals that it is not the outline of a period as a period that is offered, but rather the account of a particular theme or process falling within the period: his purpose in presenting the theme there defined is to be seen from the setting of the excursus as a unit in Bk. I rather than from the statement in 97.2: the due significance of this last, and of the demarcation of a period in 118. 2, is to be seen only in this wider context. (shrink)

The strange and fascinating philosophical problems associated with the quantum theory are brought within the grasp of the nonspecialist by this brilliant and lucid little book. The author is one of the outstanding Soviet theoretical physicists. By a judicious use of drawings and diagrams he has been able to present some high-powered physics without reliance upon equally potent mathematical methods. In fact, anyone with a fertile imagination, intellectual curiosity, and a background in high-school algebra can read this book with profit. (...) At the same time, the chapters on the uncertainty principle, quantized fields, and Dirac's theory of the electron will surely give philosophically sensitive readers a good deal to mull over; e.g., "The uncertainty principle in no way denies the existence of momentum and position as precise quantities; it merely asserts that they cannot exist simultaneously as precise quantities." The book may even be of value to sophisticated students of physics as an aid in "visualizing" some of the rather abstract concepts of quantum theory.—H. P. K. (shrink)

The serious formal investigation of n-valued systems of logic for n>2 dates back to Post's 1921 doctoral dissertation. The primary use for such structures, however, has been as model-theoretic devices in the investigation of systems of lower order. Ackermann's short book now comes as a welcome addition to the literature dealing with the formal properties and applications of n-valued systems in their own right. Ackermann begins with a general discussion of implicational calculi in which fundamental ideas of validity, well-formedness, and (...) other basic notions are set forth elegantly and clearly. While assuming the classical implicational calculus as an underlying substructure, Ackermann next motivates a consideration of possible modifications of the formal system in the direction of greater generality by means of the standard Lewis objections to the reading of "⊃" as "implies." This leads to the well known story of strict entailment, introduction of modal operators, and then a four-valued matrix as an underlying semantics for the expanded system. There then follows a good general discussion of the properties of many-valued logics, various nonstandard propositional calculi, and an admirable presentation of the Lukasiewicz-Tarski propositional calculus, accompanied by a number of important metatheorems. Ackermann also includes chapters on alternative multivalued [[sic]] systems and a glance at their applications. One would like to see, however, some discussion of such controversial matters as n-valued quantificational theory and the well-known objections to the entire program of nonstandard logistic theory.
